Vacuum at least once a week, more if you have pets or small kids. Get a professional deep clean every 12 to 18 months in a light-use house, and about every six months when there are pets, children, allergies, or a steady stream of people through the front door.
That's the short answer. Where your house falls in that range takes a little more thought, and so does making each cleaning last.
Vacuuming and deep cleaning do different jobs, and you need both. A vacuum lifts loose dirt and hair off the top of the pile. The soil, dust mites, and allergens that work their way down toward the backing over months of foot traffic are out of its reach.
What moves you toward every six months
- Foot traffic. A family of five that hosts Sunday dinner is on a different schedule than someone living alone.
- Pets. Fur and dander dull carpet fast. Plan on twice a year, and sooner if there are accidents. Urine soaks into the pad, so accident spots need our enzyme treatment for pet spots and not a surface shampoo.
- Allergies or asthma. Regular cleaning keeps dust and allergen levels down, and sensitive households can add an antibacterial sanitizer.
- Where the carpet sits. The first eight feet inside an exterior door catches most of what comes in from outside. In Columbia that means red clay after a wet week and a coat of yellow pine pollen every spring.
- Fiber. Wool wears well but is touchy about harsh chemicals. Nylon, polyester, and olefin are cheaper and common in rentals, and olefin in particular hangs on to oily soil and shows traffic lanes early.
A rough rule: wool in a busy house with kids or pets, every six months. Synthetic carpet in a quiet house with no pets, once a year or a little longer.
Vacuum like it counts
Most people vacuum too fast with a machine that stopped working properly two years ago. Check the brush roll. If the bristles are worn flat or wrapped in hair, it's skimming the top and nothing more.
Set the height for your carpet: higher for thick or plush pile so the brush can reach down, lower for thin carpet, but never so low it drags and fuzzes the fiber. Go slowly in overlapping rows. One quick pass leaves most of the fine grit behind, and that grit is what cuts fibers and turns a traffic lane gray. Give entryways and hallways a second and third pass.
Stains, and the three ways people make carpet worse
The longer a spill sits, the deeper it goes. Blot with a damp cloth, don't rub, rinse with a little clean water, and blot dry. For ink or paint, a product made for that stain can help. Use less than the label allows. If the spot is still there after one careful try, stop. A second product on top of the first is where a lot of permanent stains come from.
Then there are the mistakes we clean up after every week. Too much detergent leaves a sticky residue that attracts dirt, which is why carpet can look dingier a week after a home shampoo. Too much water soaks the pad, and in a Columbia August a soaked pad means a musty smell within days. And skipping the rinse pass on a rental machine leaves most of that soap right where you put it.
Our process avoids all three. We don't use soap, the bubbles do the lifting, and the water is minimal enough that if we start at ten, you're usually walking on the carpet by lunch.
Yes, you can clean carpet too often
With the wrong method, anyway. Repeated heavy steam cleaning or aggressive scrubbing can fray and mat fibers, loosen the backing, and fade dyes, and carpet that gets soaked over and over is a mildew risk. If you're using a wet method on heavily soiled carpet, keep maintenance cleanings at least three or four months apart. A gentle, residue-free clean can safely go more often, which is a big part of why we built the business around it. A good technician should tell you what your carpet can handle, even when the answer is "not yet."
When cleaning isn't enough
Sometimes the honest answer is new carpet. We'd rather tell you that than take your money for a clean that won't satisfy you. Signs it's time:
- Odor that comes back no matter how it's cleaned
- Faded or bleached patches
- Traffic lanes worn down to the backing or matted flat
- Stains that haven't responded to anything
- Mold
Carpet that's just old and ugly is a fair reason to replace it, too. For everything short of that, a professional carpet cleaning on the right schedule is what keeps carpet looking good for years, and every job comes with our satisfaction guarantee.
