Covering Shandon

Zip codes: 29205

Neighborhoods: Old Shandon, Wales Garden, Heathwood

Old Shandon was laid out in the 1890s as one of Columbia's first planned suburbs, and plenty of the houses around it still sit on the wood floors they were built with. Walk into a bungalow in Wales Garden or a two-story in Heathwood and there's a fair chance you'll find original boards with a good rug on top. That pairing drives most of our work here.

Rugs cleaned where they lie

Most people assume rug cleaning means rolling the rug up, hauling it off in a van, and waiting a week or two to get it back. We don't do that. Your rug gets cleaned in your house, usually in the room where it lives, and it never leaves.

Before anything wet touches it, the tech checks the fiber and the dyes. Wool behaves differently from synthetic, and an older hand-knotted piece needs a lighter touch than a machine-made rug from a big box store. Any color that looks like it might run gets tested in a corner first. The cleaning itself uses very little water and leaves nothing in the pile to attract dirt.

If yours is an heirloom, read our oriental rug cleaning page before you book. It lays out what we can and can't safely do. A few very fragile antiques belong with a specialist, and yours might be one of them.

Clean rugs protect old floors

Here's the part Shandon owners don't always think about. A rug on original heart pine protects the boards only while the rug is clean. Grit that works through a dirty rug acts like fine sandpaper on the finish underneath, every time somebody walks across it. So a rug that hasn't been cleaned in five years is quietly wearing down the floor you bought the house for. Once a year is about right for a living room rug that sees daily traffic. A dining room rug can usually go longer, unless there are kids at the table.

Pads matter too. A rug sliding around on bare heart pine scuffs the finish at the edges, so if yours has no pad, we'll mention it.

The floors under the rugs

With the rug clean, the wood beside it can look dull by comparison. Our hardwood floor cleaning uses a pH-neutral solution and very little moisture, and it lifts the grime plus the film that years of mopping leave behind. It's safe on finished wood, and that includes engineered and prefinished boards.

It's a cleaning. We don't sand and we don't recoat. Where the finish has worn to bare wood in a doorway, cleaning won't bring it back, and we'll point you to a refinisher.

Carpet upstairs

Plenty of Shandon houses still have wall-to-wall carpet in the bedrooms or a finished attic room. That gets our standard visit: a look at the rooms, a price, pre-treated spots, then the main clean. So little water goes down that nothing stays damp long enough to bother the wood below.

Shandon is a short run from Devine Street and Five Points, and our crews are through here most weeks. Call 803-310-3848 with a rough list, even if the list is one rug.
