From Thanksgiving through New Year's, the couch works harder than anybody in the house. Relatives sleep on it. Kids home from school eat on it. Put a game-day crowd in a Rosewood living room and you'll have people perched on the arms with plates of barbecue balanced on their knees.
All of it lands in the fabric. Crumbs and pet hair you can see. Body oil and fine dust you can't, and that's the part that dulls the color and makes a good sofa look tired years early.
What a Midlands December does to a sofa
More people sit longer, so more oil gets ground in. Wine, gravy, and barbecue sauce soak into light fabric fast. Cold nights keep the dog indoors and on the cushions, and with the windows shut, cooking smells and dog smell settle into the foam and stay. Then there's the decorating: glitter, pine needles, candle wax, fake snow. We pull tinsel out of sofa crevices well into February.
Our winters are mild, but the humidity swings, and damp fabric hangs on to odor longer than you'd expect.
A week or two before company
- Take the cushions off and vacuum everything with a soft brush tool, crevices included. That's where the crumbs and fur live.
- Walk around the piece in daylight and note every spot and smell now, while you still have time to deal with them.
- Find the cleaning code on the tag. A W fabric tolerates water. S wants a solvent, WS takes either one, and X is vacuum-and-leave-it-alone. We'll ask you for this letter, so write it down.
- Flip and rotate the cushions so they wear evenly.
- Book the professional clean early. Columbia upholstery appointments fill up in late November, and two weeks' notice is about right.
Keeping it together through the season
Vacuum the sofa weekly, same day you do the floors. Blot spills right away with a clean cloth and don't rub; club soda handles a lot of fresh food and drink spills, provided the code allows water. Baking soda sprinkled on a cushion for 15 minutes and vacuumed off pulls some odor.
Don't soak anything. A steam machine or a bucket of soapy water will push moisture into the foam, and in our climate a saturated cushion can stay damp for days and start to smell like mildew. Keep upholstered pieces a couple of feet from heat vents and the fireplace. Throw a blanket over the arms where hands rest. Brush the dog more often, which honestly does more for the sofa than any spray you can buy.
The classic holiday stains
- Red wine: blot with paper towels right away, then dab with three parts water to one part white vinegar until the color stops transferring.
- Chocolate and candy: scrape off the hardened part, blot with a damp cloth and a drop of mild dish soap, then blot again with plain water.
- Gravy and grease: cover it with baking soda to soak up the oil before you spot-clean.
- Candle wax: lay a paper towel over it and press with a warm iron on low. The wax wicks up into the paper.
- Pet accidents: use an enzyme cleaner, or have us treat it. Urine that reaches the foam needs more than a surface wipe.
Test on a hidden spot first. If a stain won't move, call that week. Some dyes set for good after a few days, and a spot you could have fixed on the 27th may be permanent by the 5th.
After the last guest leaves
Vacuum every upholstered surface on New Year's Day to get the glitter out. Look again for stains, because some only show once they dry. Open the windows for half an hour.
When it's our turn
Some things are past home care. Pet odor that keeps coming back, anything that smells like mildew, a stain bigger than your palm, or a silk or velvet piece all belong to a professional. So does a sofa that sets off someone's allergies. We won't promise every old stain comes out; a wine spill that sat through two weeks of company sometimes only fades.
When we come out, the technician reads the cleaning code, checks the fabric, and tests a hidden seam to see if the dye bleeds. Polyester, cotton blends, microfiber, and linen all react differently to moisture, and getting that match right is what keeps a cushion from shrinking or bleeding. After a vacuum, we mist a carbonated solution over the fabric. The bubbles lift the soil without soaking through to the cushion, and we pull it back out along with most of the moisture. There's no soap, so nothing tacky stays behind to grab the next round of dirt. We groom the nap so it dries evenly, and a typical living room set takes around 90 minutes. Give it an hour before anyone sits down.
Most homes do fine with upholstery cleaning every six to twelve months. If we're already there before the holidays, it's easy to add the rug under the coffee table with our in-home rug cleaning, or treat the dog's favorite corner with an enzyme pet treatment on the same visit.
